Where We Serve

  Education and Hope is a small, non-profit education foundation based in the western highlands of Guatemala. The program aims to increase access to education among impoverished children and young adults in this area by providing students with monthly scholarships, as well as by offering reinforcement in the form of tutoring after school. Education and Hope was founded in 1997 by Julie Coyne, who continues to serve as the project’s executive director.  Julie is a native of Norwalk, CT and has lived and worked in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala since early 1994.

The program is comprised of three main components:
  1. Comprehensive scholarships that enable students to attend a variety of different educational institutions in the city of Quetzaltenango;
  2. an after school tutoring program delivering necessary academic reinforcement;
  3. Casa Esperanza, a home for young people who do not have families to support them while they attain an education.

We recognize that a child’s ability to learn has much to do with his or her health and social well-being, so our approach is holistic in nature.  We do our best to meet each child’s individual medical and nutritional needs, and provide shoes and clothing to those in need as well.  At the after school program we have worked hard to create a caring, supportive environment where the kids feel safe and know that they are loved.  That so many have succeeded in spite of overwhelming hardship is the greatest testimony to the impact our program has had on their lives.
